KINGS BAY, Ga.--Cmdr. Matthew Luff, commanding officer of the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Tennessee (SSBN 734) (Gold), flies gold and silver dolphin flags aboard the ship while underway. The flags signify all eligible crew have qualified submarine warfare within the 12 months they are allotted. The crew recently conducted a full at-sea crew exchange, swapping out crews while keeping the submarine at sea and mission capable. The at-sea crew exchange allowed the crews to maintain a secure “bubble” from possible COVID-19 exposure and continue the U.S. Department of Defense’s number one mission of strategic deterrence.
