Spc. Joseph Kyrouz with the Florida National Guard's 868th Engineer Company out of Live Oak, Florida is currently activated in support of COVID-19 community-based testing sites in Jacksonville, Florida. He served 10 years in the Army Reserves and then took a 10 year break in service, but he made his mom a promise two years ago before she passed that he would get back into the army and serve once again.
His role with the 868th Engineers is a heavy equipment operator, but on the front lines of the COVID-19 response, he’s all about safety as he helps his fellow soldiers decontaminate once they come off the testing line. It’s clear to see he truly loves serving his fellow Floridians.
“I love the Florida National and I’m glad to be a part of it. I made the promise to my mother to get back in the military. I’ve loved every drill I’ve done and loving the people I’m working with. They are awesome Soldiers. We are out here taking care of our community. I live In Orlando and we're here in Jacksonville, but we are just one big nation and one huge community.”
His mother passed in 2018 from Alzheimer’s, but this Mother’s Day he honors her with his promise, his commitment, and his great love for his country.
