The scouts of Boy Scout Troop 425 recite the Boy Scout Oath during the quarterly Court of Honor ceremony at the Base Chapel, June 5. Overall, the scouts earned 65 merit badges within two months. With Scout Patrol Leader Brady Jernigan as the master of ceremonies, the scouts received badges, new ranks and special awards. Several scouts also earned the Hawaiiana Award, a medal and patch that can only be earned in Hawaii and worn on the Boy Scout uniform, from the Aloha Council. Nathaniel Gribbins, 12, received the Medal of Merit for helping save his mother’s life three years ago by using his skills as a Boy Scout. The scouts spent more than 6,100 hours volunteering from May of 2011 until April of this year. “Our troop has been busy,” Jernigan said. “[The year has] been fantastic. Every year there is a new set of cub scouts. [The cub scouts have] improved so much. They’re a great group of boys.” Jacob Grana, 11, a den chief who acts as a liaison between the cub scouts and boy scouts, said he enjoyed earning his American Heritage merit badge because he was able to learn more about the nation’s history. The American Heritage merit badge also meant a lot to Gunnar Goodell, a patrol leader for Troop 425. In order to earn the badge, Goodell said he learned about U.S. history, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Zach Cutter, an assistant scout patrol leader for Troop 425, said by joining the Boy Scouts, he learned many things, whether gaining a better knowledge of medicine or tying knots.
