State Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Smith and Spc. Allison Alcantara use the Army
NCO sword to cut the National Guard birthday cake during a ceremony at Camp
Chamberlain on Dec. 13, 2019, the National Guard's 383rd birthday. Smith is the
senior non-commissioned officer in the Maine Army National Guard and
Alcantara was the youngest Soldier present for the ceremony. This is a
military custom symbolizing the passing of leadership from one generation of
Soldiers to another. Smith modeled the new Army Green Service Uniform for
the occasion.
