Operations Specialist Chief Christian Mora, an instructor at the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Combat Training Pool at Officer Training Command, Newport (OTCN) in Rhode Island, watches a student with Officer Development School (ODS) class 20010 swim long distance during the third-class swimmer test at the on Oct. 23, 2019. The test consists of jumping from a 10-foot tower into the pool to simulate abandoning ship, 5 minutes of floating in the prone position, coverall inflation, and a 50-yard swim. This is the first cycle where reserve officers who would have previously attended the discontinued, two-week long Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course (DCOIC) are attending the five-week ODS course alongside active duty officers. ODS provides Staff Corps Officers and several Restricted Line designators with training necessary to prepare them to function in their role as newly commissioned Naval Officers.
