Baran “Rainman,” a former Iraqi linguist, and then 1st Lt. David Henderson, a psychological operations officer attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, hold an expended artillery round that landed near their forward operating base during a 2009 deployment to Forward Operating Base Marez in Mosul. Two years after receiving a sponsorship from Henderson, Baran received his Special Immigrant Visa, which allows Iraqi civilians, who have assisted the U.S. Government for more than a year, the opportunity to permanently reside in the United States. Leaving behind nine brothers and sisters, Baran arrived April 26 in New York City.
