It took a MAP to get from Washington’s Kitsap Peninsula to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The two locales are separated by 6,900 miles, 11.5 time zones, and one unexpected promotion. But Capt. Shannon J. Johnson, Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) commanding officer, and NHB Command Master Chief Robert Stockton reached out to Hospitalman Sara Rockhold, a laboratory technician currently deployed from NHB to NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, to inform her that her commitment and responsibility were indicative of a higher pay grade. “HN Rockhold, are you demonstrating good leadership skills? People are talking, and we’re just not sure if you are performing at the level of an E3. Actually, what I’m hearing about you is that you are performing more like a petty officer. Which is exactly what you shall become as we MAP you to hospital corpsman third class,” shared Johnson. Along with Rockhold, there were 12 other NHB Sailors recognized Sept. 3, 2019, as top performers and advanced in rate with the Navy’s Fiscal Year 2019 Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP).
