Afghan National Auxiliary Police (ANAP) trainees stand ready for drill practice on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007. The trainees are attending a two-week ANAP sustainment course being held on forward operating base (FOB) Mehtar Lam in Afghanistan's Laghman province. The course is being taught for the first time entirely by Afghan National police (ANP) instructors. Prior to this class all ANP instruction was conducted by a police technical advisory team (PTAT) made up of U.S. Air Force security forces Airmen assigned to the Laghman Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT). With the start of this course the PTAT's role has shifted to monitoring the course's progress and mentoring the ANP instructors. The two-week course is required in order for auxiliary members to become full-fledged ANP officers. The course was written by PTAT members and approved by the Afghan interior ministry. Laghman is the first Afghanistan province to have Afghan instructors teaching an ANP course. The ANP instructors are competitively selected and must successfully complete an instructor development course taught at a regional training center (RTC). (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt.
