The Trident, one of the submarines designed and built by Virginia Tech engineering students, gets ready to launch for the first races of the day in Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division’s 3,200-foot indoor tow tank on June 25, 2019. The Trident is one of 23 submarines built by students from around the world participating in the 2019 International Human-Powered Submarine Races. The colorful races are an engineering design competition created to respond to the future challenge of a shortfall of engineers and scientists in ocean and marine engineering fields.
