“I was born in Indiana and basically raised on a deer farm. It was pretty cool – they were pretty much like big puppy dogs. We’d bottle-feed the fawns, and then once they started getting bigger, they’d go back out into the pen and learn to eat feed and hay, and they’d run around the acreage that we had fenced off for them. Then we’d sell them to reservations and what-not.
As far as life lessons I learned, I had to be cognizant of everything that was going on. When I was younger, my dad was taking care of the bigger animals like the horses and peacocks and everything else, and he’d leave the babies to me. So I had to be cognizant of when they were fed and if their bottles were warmed – just like a real baby. There was a lot of awareness and responsibility surrounding that.
Probably my favorite memory was when there was a deer that the vet thought was basically born a still-born. It wasn’t breathing or anything. So my dad told me to leave because he didn’t want me to see anything bad – I was like eight or nine. He was like, ‘If he’s alive when you get back, then you can name him.’ He ended up calling me back up there, and I couldn’t believe it – the deer ended up pulling through. The vet was able to resuscitate it, and I was like, ‘I want to name him ‘Lucky’ because it’s lucky he’s alive.’ He ended up growing to a full buck, and I got to see him pretty much every day I was there. That was one of the only deer we didn’t sell. We ended up keeping him until we got rid of the farm four or five years later.”
