The sign to Grissom Air Force Base was changed in 1968 following the renaming of the base from Bunker Hill Air Force Base. The base was renamed after Lt. Col. Virgil 'Gus' Grissom killed on Jan. 27, 1967 while training for an Apollo mission at Cape Kennedy, Florida.
