PEARL HARBOR, HI (12 April 2019) - Cmdr. R. Corey Cherrett, commanding officer of the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), ceremonially cuts the cake for JTWC's 60th birthday celebration, with JTWC's civilian director Mr. Bob Falvey and several retired JTWC directors and commanding officers in attendance. JTWC was founded in Guam on May 5, 1959, consolidating several Navy and Air Force weather entities in the Pacific theater. JTWC formally celebrated its birthday in conjunction with the Tropical Cyclone Conference in April, in which many federal and academic scientists from the U.S. and abroad gathered to discuss the latest advances in tropical cyclone analysis, forecasting, and modeling.
