The reception was part of the final remembrance ceremony at Task Force 3-502nd Memorial Park. Dedicated to 248 Soldiers – all of whom were attached or assigned to 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, “Strike and Kill,” 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, and eight crewmembers, who died in a Dec. 12, 1985, airplane crash in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. The Soldiers were returning after a six-month peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula in the Middle East. Rains’ father, U.S. Army Capt. Terry L. Rains, was on the fight. Moore served with Rains’ father while deployed to the Sinai. A new memorial is scheduled to open Dec. 12, 2019.
