Staff Sgt. Steven Tirsell, heavy construction equipment operator supervisor, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 15th Engineer Battalion, Schweinfurt, Germany, and a Petaluma, Calif., native, recounts the impact the attacks of Sept. 11 had on his life in the military. As a heavy equipment operator stationed five hours away at Fort Drum, N.Y., he knew that his unit needed to be prepared to help with recovery operations.
