Cmdr. David Bauer, commanding officer of the amphibious dock landing ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), and Lt. Cmdr. Garry Thorton, ship's chaplain, cast a wreath into the Atlantic Ocean after a ceremony to honor the loss of the 230 passengers aboard Trans World Airlines Flight (TWA) 800. On July 17, 1996, at 8:19 p.m., the Boeing 747 took off from Kennedy International Airport bound for Paris, France, and exploded at 8:31 p.m. off the Long Island coast, killing all 230 passengers on board.
