Marine Corps Sgt. Thomas Averill, acting law enforcement staff noncommissioned officer assigned to Command Element (CE), 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit receives the Empire State Marine of the Week from Navy Capt. Brent Devore aboard the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS New York (LPD 21) April 16, 2018. Averill took responsibility of training chief for the CE by advancing Marines in their Marine Corps Martial Arts Program belt levels, increasing the units’ overall combat readiness, enhancing the unit’s detainee handling procedures and leading Marines on the Battle Skills Test while deployed to U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
