Acrylic painting depicting an aerial view of Iwo Jima, a volcanic island with an area of approximately eight sq. mi., during the pre-invasion bombardment of the Battle of Iwo Jima. The battle between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan was expected to take three days, but it lasted from Feb. 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945. By the end of the battle there were 6,821 Americans dead and 19,189 wounded making the Battle of Iwo Jima unforgettable. (U.S. Marine Corps painting by Pfc. Kerstin Roberts)
