Staff Sgt. Michel Garcia currently serves as a drill instructor with Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Garcia became a drill instructor in April 2017. “Since I graduated boot camp in April, 2008, I always wanted to come back to help make the next generation of leaders,” said Garcia, a 31-year-old native of Newport News, Va. “The most rewarding part is seeing that end result of making a Marine, seeing how they look and how they act, and hearing the comments and compliments from their parents on the transformation of their children on graduation day.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 19,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 49 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps. (Photo composite by Cpl. Joseph Jacob)
