Sgt. Jaime Balderrama, 26, San Juan, Tex., native, is honored as "Veteran of the Game" by the New York Mets and presented with an American flag by Mets outfielder, Nick Evans, May 29. Balderrama, an infantryman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, served as platoon guide during a deployment to Afghanistan from July 2010 to February 2011. During this 5th deployment, he stepped up and filled the rolls of platoon sergeant and watch officer, leading more than 30 combat patrols. During Fleet Week New York 2011, Balderrama is the officer in charge of the Marines with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - New York, conducting simulated raids throughout New York City, showcasing the capabilities of the MAGTF. The Marines embarked on the Navy's Amphibious Assault Ships, the USS Iwo Jima and USS New York to take part in Fleet Week New York 2011 from May 25 to June 1. "Veteran of the Game" is part of the "Welcome Back Veterans," program, a national public awareness and fundraising initiative supporting America's war veterans and their families.
