Pfc. Ford F. Boyles, of Phoenix, collects volcanic sand on the landing beaches of Iwo Jima, Dec. 19, 2017. Boyles, 25, is an armorer with III Marine Expeditionary Force and 2011 graduate of Paradise Valley High School. He enlisted in Dec. 2016. Nearly every Marine who visits the island collects and keeps sand from the beach on Iwo Jima. Marines from across III MEF, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Marine Corps Installations Pacific, flew some 850 miles east, from Okinawa, Japan, to visit the historic island, now called Iwo To, to tour the battle site and honor the men who fought there in February 1945.
