Col. Rudolph M. Janiczek, commanding officer of Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, and guests help with the cutting of the ribbon during the grand opening of George’s Place at Camp Margarita, April 22. Friends and family celebrated with the cutting of the ribbon, a cake and a walk-through of the building renovated by retired and active duty Marines. Little was known about the origin of the name George’s Place, before Marines of Headquarters Bn. dug a little deeper into the building’s history. The myth of “Old George” has been exaggerated since 1941 and includes a story of a battle-hardened master sergeant who ran a bar aboard the camp, following its construction the same year. Marines and sailors of Headquarters Bn. dedicated their spare time to complete the renovations throughout 2010.
