U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Karen Ballesteros currently serves as a senior drill instructor with Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Ballesteros joined the Marine Corps in January 2009, and became a drill instructor in December 2014. “I wanted to become a drill instructor since I was a recruit,” said Ballesteros, a 30-year-old native of Meriden, Conn. “I idolized my drill instructor and how she carried herself as a female. She was strong, independent and basically broke all the stereotypes. It’s part of keeping the cycle going, recruits turning into drill instructor and seeing their recruits turning into drill instructors. I wanted to maintain the standard.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 19,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 49 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl.
