170823-N-KR394-002 SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Aug. 23, 2017) Cdr. Joseph Carney (left), division head for Naval Medical Center San Diego Complex Surgical Sports Team, talks with Lt. Cdr. Bennett Shapiro (right), an orthopedic surgeon at U.S. Naval Hospital Guam (NHG), via secure video teleconferencing (VTC) technology. Carney and Shapiro discussed the results of a recent consultation with a patient, a 29-year-old Army officer, to determine whether the patient would be a candidate for hip arthroscopic surgery. The Aug. 23, 2017, encounter marked the first orthopedic, or ‘tele-orthopedic,’ consult done via (VTC) in Navy history.
