Air Force Academy Cadet 1st Class Hayley Weir and Dr. Ryan Burke, assistant professor with the Department of Military and Strategic Studies, designed armor prototypes capable of stopping 9 mm, .40-caliber Smith and Wesson and .44 magnum pistol rounds fired from close range. The project is now under provisional patent status, and Weir and Burke have a year to improve the technology before they can file the official patent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
