Arthur Basulto, U.S. Park Ranger, Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior, displays a California King snake during the Kid Fest held at Semper Fit gymnasium aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., April 26. Harmless to humans with no venom to speak of, the California King is a constrictor which feeds on rodents and other snakes, especially rattlesnakes. It is believed by herpetologists that the banded pattern of the California King is used to "mesmerize" rattlers before moving in for the kill. King snakes are also among the most popular pet snakes in the world because of their adaptability to humans and ease of care.
