Medgar Evers, Whitney Young and Ralph Abernathy were among the many figures of the Civil Rights Movement who served during World War II and the Korean War. The wars, especially the segregated conditions of WWII, sparked collective aspirations amongst African Americans to fight for equal treatment and justice at home with the same fervor and commitment they did against Nazi Germany on the battlefields of Europe, Africa and Asia.
