Steven J. Smith, a medic and native of Rapid City, S.D., attached to the 211th Engineer Company, Route Clearance Package-10. Smith was recently caught in an insurgent ambush and had several rocket-propelled grenades land within a few feet of his position; one was close enough to embed shrapnel in his helmet and radio.
