Ensign John Thomson, from Long Island, N.Y., directs an Spanish navy AB-212 helicopter from the 3rd Air Wing Squadron during fight deck operations aboard the Whidbey Island-class amphibious dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall. Gunston Hall is on a scheduled deployment in West Africa supporting Africa Partnership Station, an international initiative developed by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa that aims to improve maritime safety and security in Africa.
