A crop duster sprays a 2,500 pound load of coal ash on the Platte River, Feb. 18, just north of the Highway 6 bridge, east of Ashland, Neb. The state of Nebraska asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District for technical assistance to reduce potential ice jams and flooding on the Platte, and then acted on the advice to contract for ash and dusting. Three weeks later the more than 20-inch-thick ice broke up and moved downstream.
