A Paryan resident receives a compensation payment of $890 at the Paryan district center, Panjshir province, Afghanistan, Jan. 31. The event was the first in a series of efforts by the Panjshir provincial government and road construction contractors to compensate private citizens who gave up property to allow for the construction of a main road through the valley.
