Sgt. Jarrod Stegall, a vehicle crew member with the 626th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, scans for targets during a simulated convoy here July 16, 2015. Stegall conducted training on the 3rd Brigade Combat Team’s unstabilized gunnery trainer-individual, the first of its kind in the active component Army, which allows unit master gunners to build scenarios for crew gunners to virtually engage targets and validate them before conducting live-fire gunnery tables. The system, which consists of a simulated weapon system, a heads up display visor and a headset that allows the gunner to communicate with a synthetic vehicle commander and driver, replaces the Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer, a full-scale mockup of a vehicle that is designed to focus more on crew drills and convoy scenarios. In addition to the training the system offers, the UGT-I allows for the unit master gunners, senior gunners and leadership to receive immediate results from a training simulation and identify areas where a trainee may need additional training time before becoming certified to conduct live-fire table gunnery.
