Air Force Staff Sgt. Misty Hobbs, medical technician, Air Force Research Laboratory, 711th Human Performance Wing, Human Effectiveness Directorate (RH), and Air Force Tech. Sgt. Andrew Jimenez, medical technician, RH, draw Wright-Patterson Air Force Base firefighter Aaron Chaney's blood to determine his lactate levels after a strenuous simulated firefighter combat challenge at Wright-Patterson Training Field, Ohio, in March 2014. They are aided by Wright-Patt firefighters (left to right), Bryan Gustafson, Jacob King, fire chief, and Matt Holley. The mock challenge included a stairclimb, hose pull, dummy carry, and other exhaustion-inducing tasks. Chaney also wore a physiology monitor and sweat patches as part of an Air Force Research Laboratory 711th Human Performance Wing study that is trying to isolate and manage the body's chemical reaction to chronic stress and save firefighter and other first responder lives.
