U.S. Marines Lance Cpl. William Sutton, left, and Lance Cpl. Brock Prater stand in their workshop aboard the USS Essex (LHD 2) at sea in the Pacific Ocean, May 30, 2015. Sutton and Prater are airframes and structures technicians with the Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Department, Medium Marine Tiltrotor Squadron 161 (Reinforced), 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The AIMD shop’s main purpose is to keep their aircraft flying. Their work can range from replacing bearings and links to welding cracks in doors or oil tanks. Along with keeping the birds flying and the crew members and pilots safe, they are involved in improving the quality of life for almost everyone on the Essex. These Marines receive special requests frequently and have finished a list of projects to assist operations and improve living conditions. Some of these projects include creating torpedo tubes from scratch to test metal detecting capabilities during Navy Aviation Ordnance training, and making tire-racks for the Aviation Supply Department to increase storage capabilities. The Marines also made water cooler covers and tables to augment the aesthetics of the wardroom. AIMD’s commitment to the job, no matter how strange or how small, exemplifies the teamwork of the 15th MEU and Essex Amphibious Ready Group. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Anna Albrecht/ Released)
