Rct. Kwenela M. Tubbs, Platoon 4027, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, practices a forward shoulder roll May 26, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. The forward shoulder roll is part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which is designed to increase the warfighting capabilities of Marines and enhance self-confidence and esprit de corps. Tubbs, 24, from Montgomery, Ala., is scheduled to graduate Aug. 7, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
