Master Sgt. Jose Almeida, center, checks Airman 1st Class Michael Curley’s Special Purpose Insertion Extraction System harness before performing an extraction exercise at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., April 21, 2015. Both Airmen are with the 227th Air Support Operations Squadron, New Jersey Air National Guard. The 227th were recertified on Fast-Rope Insertion Extraction System FRIES training by Soldiers from the Long Range Surveillance C Company, 1-158th Cavalry, Maryland Army National Guard. This was the first time the 1-150th Assault Helicopter Battalion, New Jersey Army National Guard, has performed FRIES training with their own helicopters and equipment in New Jersey. FRIES is used when a fast exit from a rotary-wing aircraft into a restricted area, including water operations, is required. It provides a method for inserting and extracting special operations forces personnel when an aircraft cannot land. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Mark C. Olsen/Released)
