U.S. Air Force Capt. Derek M. Argel, born on March 11, 1977, was a native of San Jose, Calif. He graduated with honors from Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, Calif., in 1995. Following graduation, Argel attended the Northwestern Preparatory School in Malibu, Calif., and the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., earning his commission in 2001. Argel was then selected and completed the Special Tactics Officer course and was assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla. He was the Team Leader of RED Team, the only team within the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron made up of Pararescuemen. Argel was on his second operational deployment when the Comp Air 7 aircraft he and three other Special Operations personnel and one Iraqi Air Force member were flying in, crashed in east central Iraq.
