Commercial riggers watch as a crane lifts a Johnston boiler on to a platform on the north side of Naval Station Newport's central steam plant. Low-hanging telephone wires required the boiler to be lifted from a double drop stretch trailer bed and swung around to the plant's entrance way. The new smaller boiler, capable of operating on natural gas or heating oil, will be used during the fall and spring seasons before the real cold winter weather arrives. The boiler is expected to provide enough steam without having to fire up the bigger winter boilers saving on fuel costs and reducing air emissions.
