A handful of 3rd Recruit Training Battalion drill instructors honored the lives lost Sept. 11, 2001, by completing a combined 3,000 burpees in 12 hours on the 13th anniversary of the tragedy. “The idea behind doing 3,000 burpees in a day is to commemorate every single life that was lost on 9/11,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Croft, who thought of the homage. “There were 2,977 casualties that day, so we just rounded it up to 3,000. [Burpees] are painful, and for all those that lost their lives, we can go through a little pain. This is something we’d like to continue throughout the years. It helps everyone remember and builds unit camaraderie,” said Croft, a chief drill instructor for India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion.
