Rct. Cavel Hylton, a 23-year-old from St. Thomas, Jamaica, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Hylton is training with Platoon 1053, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate July 25, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps to better myself. The Marine Corps is the hardest [boot camp] to go through,” said Hylton, a 2007 graduate of St. Thomas Techincal High School in Jamaica. “I didn’t want to go through the easy branches. I want to go through [this] to make myself stronger.” Hylton was recruited from Hartford, Conn. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
