Ed Bearrs, American Civil War historian, gives remarks June 17 during a ceremony to commemorate the explosion that happened at Washington Arsenal, located on what is now known as the Fort McNair portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Extreme summer heat caused drying explosives to combust, sending sparks into the gunpowder-filled room where women were working, killing 21 women June 17, 1864.
