Rct. Jesus Alvarez, a 20-year-old from Marietta, Ga., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Alvarez is training with Platoon 1040, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate June 20, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps because I wanted to have a better living and more stability,” said Alvarez, a 2012 graduate of Sprayberry High School in Marietta. “It’s hard to pay the bills at home. Also, [I wanted] to better myself physically and mentally and to be more confident. Before I came here, I wasn’t as confident as I am now, and I needed to experience the world outside of where I came from.” Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
