Quartermaster 2nd Class Tom Sandborn, from Thornton, N.H., hoists a broom to signify that Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) passed all areas of combat system ship qualification trial. The tradition harks back to World War II when submarines, returning from patrol after successfully engaging all enemy contacts with their full load of torpedoes, would fly a broom to signify that they had swept the enemy from the seas. Theodore Roosevelt is underway conducting training for future deployments. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Tim Haake/Released)
