A missile is captured mid-launch in a nighttime photograph, surrounded by intense exhaust plumes of fire and white smoke. The missile appears to be launching vertically from a naval vessel, visible in the lower right corner of the frame. The image captures the dramatic moment of ignition with billowing orange and white combustion gases illuminating the scene.

The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force destroyer JDS Chokai launches a Standard Missile 3 during a Missile Defense Agency joint missile defense intercept test. The SM-3 was launched to intercept a medium-range separating target that was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. The system, ship's crew and missile performed as expected, but the SM-3 failed to intercept the target. The failure is under investigation.
