Lt. Michael Barna, left, surgeon with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Lt. Timothy Platz, surgeon with Fleet Surgical Team 7, and Hospital corpsman Petty Officer 2nd Class James Hubbs, operating room technician with FST-7, perform an emergency appendectomy aboard the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex. The team successfully removed the patient's appendix after he complained of severe stomach pains. Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed expeditionary strike group and serves as the flagship for CTF-76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force commander.
