Sgt. Jorge Carrillo currently serves as a Marine Corps drill instructor with Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Carrillo joined the Marine Corps in June 2008 and became a drill instructor in March 2013. “I became a drill instructor because of the way my drill instructors were,” said Carrillo. “We pretty much only had one drill instructor for my platoon and just seeing all the hard work and effort that he put in, how one sole man changed a group of 90 recruits by himself, that is what motivated me to be a drill instructor. To see how I can implement that type of change and make young boys grow into young men, basically instill what was taught to me and to keep our traditions alive. People are always asking how you want to be remembered, I want to be remembered as someone who changed someone’s life.” Carrillo is a native of Tucson, Ariz. About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 20,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
