Rct. Lalaram Guyadin, a 21-year-old native of Washington, D.C., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Guyadin is training with Platoon 3020, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate March 14, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps because I have four brothers and one sister. I want to set an example for them. They’re all younger, and I’m the oldest. They look up to me because my father isn’t staying with them. My mother works hard every single day and ... I’m basically like the father figure for them. I want to set a good example for them to follow, because it’s very hard to choose the right path with all the freedom they have. I don’t want them to take advantage of that and go the wrong way,” said Guyadin. “Secondly, I wanted the challenge for myself. If you’re not challenged, you won’t work to accomplish anything in your everyday life,” said Guyadin, who graduated from Cardozo High School in Washington, D.C., in 2011. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
