Alexander Messmer, a Young Marine, is promoted to Master Gunnery Sgt. and appointed the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Young Marines sergeant major Sept. 22, 2012, by retired Sgt. Maj. Ernest Flowers III, regimental commander. After receiving the 3rd Division Young Marine of the Year Award, Messmer was meritoriously promoted to sergeant major Jan. 1, 2014. Messmer will contend for the title of National Young Marine of the Year later this year and plans to attend college at North Carolina State after high school.
