Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Andrew Caplinger and Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Kenyatta Pore lay a wreath at the grave of Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Maj. Edward Ratcliff at the Cheesecake Cemetery aboard Naval Weapons Station Yorktown as part of the annual Wreaths Across America program. Ratcliff, a runaway slave, joined the Union Army as part of the 38th U.S. Colored Troops. On September 29, 1864, at the battle of Chapin's Farm, Ratcliff commanded and gallantly led his company after his commanding officer had been killed. For his bravery and heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Descendants of the Ratcliff family were in attendance for the ceremony, including his grandson, Edward Radcliff III, who served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II.
