Scientists and support personnel of the U.S. Antarctic Program take their seats aboard a C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft from 304th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron in preparation for their flight to Antarctica for Operation Deep Freeze. Operation Deep Freeze is the U.S. military's support of the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Antarctic Program providing operational and logistic support conducted by the Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. It is possibly the U.S. military's most difficult peacetime mission due to the extreme adversity of the environment.
