The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Buckthorn, a 100-foot inland buoy tender homeported in Sault Ste Marie, Minn., lowers a lighted ice buoy into the St. Mary's River, Nov. 8, 2012. The Buckthorn's crew is taking part in the 9th Coast Guard District's annual Operation Fall Retrieval, which removes or replaces approximately half of the aids to navigation in the region due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and severe weather.
